Bormio: An Underrated Gem for Skiing, Relaxation, and Adventure
If you're looking for the perfect mix of breathtaking alpine skiing, historic hot springs, and authentic Italian charm, look no further than Bormio. Nestled in the heart of the Italian Alps, this resort town is an underrated gem that deserves a spot on every winter sports and wellness enthusiast's radar. While it may not boast the vast expanses of the larger ski resorts, Bormio offers pristine, well-groomed slopes, powdery snow, and a touch of history that sets it apart.
Staying in Style: The Eden Hotel
For my stay, I couldn’t have chosen a better place than Eden Hotel—a boutique, beautifully designed retreat just a two-minute walk from the ski lifts. The hotel perfectly balances a wintery, wooden aesthetic with modern luxury, making it feel both cozy and sophisticated.
One of the standout features? The breakfast. Hands down, it was the best I’ve had at any hotel in Europe. Everything is fresh, made to order, and perfectly balanced—not overly sweet (which, trust me, is hard to find in Italy!). And the best part? The dining room is enclosed by glass walls, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the snowy mountains while you eat. Every morning felt like a dream-like alpine escape. (Also not sponserd btw! :)
Now while we fell in love we this humble yet heart warming hotel and have already booked another stay there, we realized that Bormio knows how to take care of its guests no matter where you stay, so here are a few more of our top picks.
1. Sottovento Luxury Hospitality – Where Elegance Meets the Alps
If you’re looking for pure alpine indulgence, Sottovento Luxury Hospitality is the place to stay. Picture spacious, ultra-chic suites with private balconies, the scent of fresh pastries from the in-house bakery wafting through the air, and a spa sanctuary featuring a Turkish bath, sauna, and an outdoor hot tub with mountain views. This isn’t just a hotel—it’s an experience. Plus, they make their own artisanal chocolates and pastries, so every morning feels like waking up in an Italian dream.
2. Hotel Baita Dei Pini – Cozy, Classic, and Steps from the Slopes
For a true alpine escape, Hotel Baita Dei Pini blends authentic mountain charm with modern comfort. It’s a stone’s throw from Bormio 2000 and Ciuk ski lifts, meaning you can roll out of bed, sip on a strong Italian espresso, and be on the slopes in minutes. The rooms? Cozy, wood-paneled, and oh-so-inviting after a day in the snow. And let’s talk about breakfast—hearty, fresh, and exactly what you need before a day of adventure. This is the kind of place where you feel at home, but better.
3. QC Terme Grand Hotel Bagni Nuovi – A 5-Star Fairytale with Thermal Bliss
Ever dreamed of staying in a palatial spa resort surrounded by the Alps? Welcome to QC Terme Grand Hotel Bagni Nuovi, where the 19th-century Art Nouveau grandeur meets a world-class thermal spa. The outdoor hot springs, open year-round, let you soak under the stars while snowflakes dance around you. Every room is elegantly furnished with vintage touches, and the entire place oozes historic charm and luxury. If you’re after a romantic, high-end retreat with one of the best spa experiences in Europe, this is it.
Skiing in Bormio: Powder Perfection
Bormio’s 50 kilometers of slopes may not make it the largest ski area, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in quality and beauty. The slopes start at 2,000 meters (6,560 feet) above sea level, meaning the snow remains powdery and pristine, even at the end of March—a rare find in late-season skiing.
Renting gear was a breeze thanks to OKGO ski rentals (not sponsored, just super happy!) , whose friendly and knowledgeable staff made sure I had the best equipment for the conditions. Their kindness and helpfulness made the experience even smoother, allowing me to hit the slopes without a hitch.
Who Is Bormio Best For?
If your idea of a ski trip involves exploring hundreds of kilometers of different trails, Bormio might not be your top pick. However, if you appreciate meticulously groomed runs, stunning alpine views, and a relaxed, intimate ski atmosphere, this resort is an absolute treasure. It’s an underrated destination that more skiers should have on their radar.
A Natural Spa: Relaxing in Bormio’s Hot Springs
After an intense week of skiing, there’s no better way to relax your muscles than soaking in Bormio’s natural thermal waters. These hot springs have been famous for centuries—even Leonardo da Vinci was known to bathe in them!
One of the best, most authentic experiences is La Pozza da Vinci, a completely free, open-air thermal pool hidden in the middle of breathtaking nature. To get there, simply type La Pozza da Vinci into Google Maps, park safely on the side of the road, and walk along the trail until you arrive. I highly recommend adventuring further until the end of the trail—it’s short, family-friendly, and absolutely beautiful.
For those who prefer a more luxurious spa experience, Bormio also has high-end thermal baths and wellness centers, offering the perfect mix of relaxation and indulgence.
Beyond Skiing: Cycling and Alpine Adventures
While winter transforms Bormio into a skier’s paradise, summer and fall open up a whole new world of adventure. The region is a dream for cycling enthusiasts, with legendary Alpine passes like Stelvio and Gavia, which challenge even the most seasoned riders. Whether you're into road biking or prefer scenic mountain trails, Bormio is an adventurer’s playground year-round.
Savoring Bormio: Local Food and Restaurants
No trip to Italy is complete without indulging in its incredible cuisine, and Bormio is no exception. The region is known for its rich, hearty mountain dishes, perfect for refueling after an active day. Some must-try specialties include:
Pizzoccheri – A delicious dish of buckwheat pasta, potatoes, cabbage, and melted cheese, perfect for a cozy meal.
Sciatt – Crispy fried cheese balls that are as addictive as they sound.
Bresaola – Locally cured beef that pairs beautifully with fresh bread and a glass of regional wine.
The best restaurant I tried? Without a doubt, Osteria de i Magri. The food was incredible, offering a true taste of the region in a welcoming, intimate setting. If you’re in Bormio, this is a must-visit spot.
Final Thoughts: Why Bormio Should Be on Your List
Bormio may not be Italy’s most famous ski resort, but it is certainly one of the most beautifully kept, welcoming, and rewarding. Whether you’re carving through its powdery slopes, unwinding in its centuries-old hot springs, or exploring its stunning landscapes by bike, Bormio offers a unique and unforgettable alpine experience.
If you’re looking for luxury, adventure, and authenticity all in one, Bormio is the perfect place to add to your travel bucket list.
